The Design Process
Inspiration for a new sign can come from many places - a favorite saying, a family motto, a piece of scripture or a special request from a customer. I love to design and customize by adding names, special dates, details or special sayings.
I take the idea to my computer where I design a scaled version (a mockup) of the sign. I love this part! I can present my customer with a realistic visual preview of what their sign will look like when completed, and it gives me an opportunity to address every detail of the sign's design and construction before I head into my workshop to cut the lumber. Will the sign have a frame or will it be frameless? What color will it be? What color will the background be? Black with white letters, white with black letters, or something totally different? After determining the size of the sign, I design the wording, spacing and font style. I then create a temporary stencil that I use to apply the design to the wood background with a high-quality paint. If the sign has a frame, I take exact measurements, cut the frame and attach it to the wooden sign.
